Agricultural loan waiver and Caste/Religion based reservation

It is the final year of the 5 year term for the UPA government in India. So you can see the excitement to give out soaps to farmers in the budget. But is it the right strategy? The growing and thriving Indian market economy makes it easier for the finance minister Mr. Chidambaram to lavish Rs. 60000 crores for the farmers. Farmers are always at the mercy of mother nature to a great extent. And it is true that some farmers are at distress due to drought, pests, crop destruction etc. due to natural calamities and a variety of other reasons. Now, the waiver is for all farmers with 2.5 hectors or less. Many of them, especially the ones growing tobacco, rubber, pepper and ginger are making good money these days as the price is very good right now. Even the price of rice is pretty good compared to previous years. Now, is it right to put every one of these in the same category and write off all the debts? The answer is no. They should have given the waiver to the deserving farmers who had losses because of any of the above said causes.

The caste based reservation system works the similar way. Students who come from poor homes are at a disadvantage. You cannot study when you are hungry. It is the responsibility of the government to provide 3 meals a day, loans and scholarships to cover the educational expenses of the deserving kids. But the deserving kids all cannot be coming from a few castes or religions alone. Evey one in a caste are not going to be alike. There are going to be some very well off people in any caste or religion. Their kids do not and should not be benefiting from reservation. Similarly there are going to be some very poor kids from the upper castes too. They need to be provided the 3 meals a day, loans and scholarships too.

But the politicians who do not have the will to move the country forward will not do any thing to change the existing system. They will prefer to pander to their vote banks only.
